Georgia and Alabama

The following incentives can benefit both new and established businesses.

GEORGIA


Business Expansion and Support Act (BEST)

All of the following, as well as tax credits for investment and research and development, are available to eligible businesses.

Sales Tax Exemptions

  • On select machinery and components
  • Other exemptions depend on size of business and total investmen

Job Tax Credits

  • For new job creation
  • $750-$4,000 per job depending on location

Headquarters Tax Credits

  • For businesses who locate their headquarters in the state
  • Up to $5,000 per job

Retraining Tax Credits

  • Retraining of existing employees
  • For use of new equipment/technologies

QuickStart

  • Nationally recognized program
  • FREE high-quality, customized training

Child Care Tax Credits

  • For employers who purchase/build qualified child care facility
  • Equal to 100% of cost of construction

 

ALABAMA

Capital Investment Tax Credit

  • Available each year, up to 20 years
  • Five percent (5%) of total capital costs for qualifying project
  • Begins year project “placed in service”

State Corporate Income Tax

  • Reduces effective tax rate to 4.42% (from 6.5%) after federal income tax deduction

Sales and Use Tax

  • Four state rate differentials; 1.5% rate for manufacturing
  • Sales and/or use taxes may be imposed by local governments
  • Tax abatement for building construction materials and equipment (state sales, use and non-education portion of local taxes for eligible projects; subject to local approval)

Enterprise Zones

  • Tax credit/exemptions in designated areas
  • Encourages economic growth in areas with depressed economies

Inventory Tax

  • No property tax on inventory (including raw materials and finished goods)

AIDT

  • Nationally recognized program
  • FREE high-quality, customized training

Property Tax

  • Limits state millage rate on both real and personal property to 6.5 mills or $6.50 for every $1,000 of assessed value
  • Business property (real and personal) taxed on 20% fair market value
  • Tax abatement (by city/county/public authority) on non-educational taxes for up to 10 years

Educational Tax Credit

  • For programs enhancing basic educational skills of employees
  • Up to and including 12th grade level
  • 20% tax credit

Pollution Control Equipment

  • Property tax exemption
  • For equipment, facilities, materials used to control, reduce or eliminate air or water pollution
